Why We Started the Barboza Experience
Updated: Aug 26
After spending years in professional kitchens, you learn a lot about food.
You learn technique.
You learn timing.
You learn how to organize a kitchen, lead a team and somehow find a solution when everything seems to be happening at once. But you also learn something else.
The food that means the most isn’t always served in a restaurant.
Sometimes it’s served around someone’s dining room table.
Sometimes it’s at a backyard celebration.
Sometimes it’s a dinner between a few close friends with a couple bottles of wine open
on the table.
And sometimes it’s part of a moment someone will remember for the rest of their life.
That’s ultimately what led my wife and me to create the Barboza Experience.
And while I’m the chef behind the food, this dream has never been mine alone.

We Wanted to Create Something of Our Own
There’s a certain point in your career when you begin asking yourself:
What do I want all of this experience to become?
For me, the answer wasn’t simply another kitchen.
I wanted to take everything I had learned throughout my career and build something of
our own. But ideas are one thing.
Believing enough in an idea to actually build it is something completely different.
My wife has been part of that belief from the beginning. She’s been there for the conversations, the ideas, the decisions, the changes and probably more discussions about menus and business plans than she ever expected when she married a chef.
The Barboza Experience carries our family name for a reason.
We’re building it together.
Why “Experience”?
The word was intentional.
We could have simply called it catering.
But catering doesn’t completely describe what we’re trying to create.
Because food is only one part of what a guest remembers.
Think about one of the best dinners you’ve ever had.
You probably remember what you ate.
But I bet you remember more than that.
Who were you with?
What were you celebrating?
Was there music playing?
Was there a bottle of wine on the table?
Did everyone stay longer than they expected because nobody wanted the evening to
end?
Those things matter to us.
That’s the experience.
Our Name Means Something
There’s something different about putting your family name on a business.
You can’t hide behind it.
When someone hires the Barboza Experience, they’re trusting us with something
important.
Maybe it’s a birthday.
An anniversary.
A wedding.
A family celebration.
A business dinner.
Or simply one of those rare nights when everyone you care about is able to sit around
the same table.
We understand that we’re being invited into someone’s moment.
That’s something both my wife and I take seriously.
Because when our name is attached to an event, we want people to associate that
name with quality, hospitality and being genuinely taken care of.
We Don’t Want Every Event to Look the Same
One of the reasons I love private dining and catering is that every event gives us an
opportunity to create something different.
A dinner for eight shouldn’t feel like an event for eighty.
A wine dinner shouldn’t feel like a birthday party.
A wedding shouldn’t feel like a corporate event.
Different people.
Different occasions.
Different menus.
Different experiences.
That keeps cooking exciting for me.
It also allows us to listen to what the guest actually wants instead of forcing every
celebration into the same package.
The Food Still Comes First
For all the talk about hospitality and experiences, there’s one thing that can’t get lost:
The food has to be great.
That’s my responsibility.
I’m constantly thinking about flavor, balance, seasonality, texture and presentation.
Sometimes that means taking something familiar and refining it.
Sometimes it means combining influences from completely different cuisines.
Sometimes it’s creating a beautiful multi-course dinner.
Other times it’s making the best version of a simple dish that I possibly can.
Not everything needs tweezers and microgreens.
It just needs intention.
And when a plate leaves my kitchen with the Barboza name attached to it, I want to be
proud of it.
But Great Hospitality Goes Beyond the Plate
This is where our vision becomes bigger than food.
We want people to feel taken care of.
Hospitality isn’t simply serving someone.
It’s anticipating what someone needs before they have to ask.
It’s remembering a dietary restriction.
It’s noticing an empty glass.
It’s understanding when guests want interaction and when they simply want to enjoy
their evening.
It’s paying attention to the details that make someone feel like the evening was created
specifically for them.
The food may bring people to the table.
How we make them feel is what they’ll remember.
My Wife Is Part of This Story
When people see the food, they naturally see my side of the business.
I’m the chef.
I’m developing dishes, building menus, testing recipes and obsessing over the details
on the plate.
But behind the Barboza Experience is a partnership.
My wife has supported the vision, challenged ideas, listened to countless plans and
helped me believe that this could become something bigger than just an idea.
There are dreams you have individually.
And then there are dreams that eventually become ours.
The Barboza Experience is one of ours.
I wouldn’t want to tell the story of how this company started without making that clear.
Building Something Bigger Than One Dinner
Our vision continues to grow.
Private dining allows us to create intimate, highly personalized experiences.
Catering lets us bring that philosophy to larger celebrations.
And as we continue building, there are other ideas and concepts that will allow us to
explore different sides of food and hospitality.
They may look different from the outside.
But they’re connected by the same philosophy:
Take care of people and give them something worth remembering.
That’s the foundation of what we’re building.
We’re Still Building
This isn’t the story of a company that’s already finished.
Far from it.
We’re building it right now.
There will be new menus.
New dishes.
New events.
New ideas.
New opportunities.
There will probably be ideas that work exactly the way we imagined and others that
send us straight back to the drawing board.
That’s part of the journey.
And I actually want this blog to show some of that.
Not just the beautiful plate after everything is finished.
The ideas behind it.
The testing.
The decisions.
The lessons.
The successes.
And the people we meet along the way.
Someday, I want us to be able to look back at these early chapters and remember what
it felt like while we were building it.
This Is Personal to Us
When your family name is connected to something, it changes the way you look at it.
Every plate matters a little more.
Every guest matters a little more.
Every event becomes another representation of what you’re trying to build.
For me, it’s an opportunity to take everything I’ve learned throughout my career and turn
it into something that belongs to us.
For my wife and me, it’s an opportunity to build something together that represents our
standards, our hospitality and our vision for what this company can become.
And hopefully, every person who experiences it can feel a little bit of that.
Because this isn’t simply a catering company.
It’s our name.
It’s our reputation.
It’s our dream.
And it’s something we’re incredibly proud to build together.

This is the Barboza Experience.
And we’re just getting started.
